Working Areas
Himalayan Climate Boot Camp 2022
The project aims to empower 8 climate journalists from the Koshi Basin which originates from Mount Everest and extends up to India and Bangladesh with diverse economic, regional and socio-cultural backgrounds by equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skill and mindset to produce impactful climate stories. While 4 journalists will be from Nepal, remaining others will be from India and Bangladesh (2 each). The boot camp will involve open and profound interactions and critical discussions among participants and trainers, drawn from eminent science and environment journalists.
The boot camp will employ ‘Focus Group Discussions’ and ‘Key Informant Interviews’ as primary methods for gathering data and information pertaining to climate change in the Koshi Basin . Participants will be taken to field visits in the community around Khumbhu region- a small village which is also a gateway to Mount Everest to obtain first-hand information on the range of impacts faced by communities including their adaptation and mitigation challenges. Back at the boot camp, they will be encouraged to relate their ground investigation to the latest scientific evidence or the lack thereof.
The specific objectives of the project are:
- To impartnuanced science reporting skills for evidence-backed coverage of climate stories to 8 selected climate journalists from the Koshi basin
- To promote mutual sharing of the pertinent challenges faced by working climate journalists and figure out ways to overcome them through intense discussion and critical reflection
- To provide a web-based platform to journalists to share their news stories, articles and commentaries on various facets of climate science
